Commission for an Opera Concert

 学生時代は、大学の合唱団に入っていたこともあり、個人レッスンの教授が推薦してくれて、オクラホマ大学の声楽コンサートの為に絵を何点か作ることになりました。

オペラは、ジプシーの女と村の男との恋を歌ったもので、その為の絵を。

While I was studying painting, I also sang in one of the university's choirs, which they gave me a scholarship. My voice lessons professor knew about my artworks and recommended me to a professor at the University of Oklahoma. The OU professor was looking for a collaboration of opera concert and artworks.

The opera was titled "Gypsy Tales," and it was a love story between a gypsy and village boy. 

最初の作品はジプシー。油でマットボードの上に描きました。構図を思いつくまでにしばらくかかりましたが、アイデアが浮かんでからはスムースに進みました。

My first piece was the gypsy girl. This was an oil piece on mat board. It took the time to come up with an idea, but it went smoothly after I decided on the design.  

村の若者については、ジプシーよりもはるかに手間取り、上半身だけ色を付けて、それで終わってしまいました。😅 人形は顔が命！😅　ということで顔だけに時間をかけたのですが、何だかありふれたアバコロのモデルみたいになってしまいました。笑

I had a hard time painting this village boy, which I was never satisfied. I was spending a long time for the face, which it turned out looking like an A&F model...lol I ended up painting the only upper body. 

その後は、この2人を使ってデジタルで3作品。

上から”誘惑”、”契り”、そして”出発”です。ジプシーとの出会いから恋の芽生え（誘惑）、そして契りを結ぶことになります。子供を身ごもったことを機会に村を出ることを決意することとなりました。この3つの作品は簡単にできました。

After completing the 2 paintings, I produced 3 more digital pieces using the 2. From the top, "seduction," "consummation," and "departure." A village boy fell in love with a gypsy girl (seduction), then consummation. When the gypsy became pregnant, they decided to leave the village together.

このコンサートの素晴らしかったことは、ジプシーへの差別問題について触れたこと。多くのジプシーと呼ばれる人たちは、未だに多くの国々（特にヨーロッパ）で差別を受け続けています。なので彼らは村を出ることを決意したわけです。

その他にも、移民への差別問題にもこのコンサートは触れました。3人の歌手によるパフォーマンスも素晴らしく、とても心に残る経験になりました。

This concert touched an issue of the systematic discrimination against gypsies in many nations, especially in Europe. Also, it explored the prejudice against 'immigrant,' which was timely (still is) issues in the United States, considering the presidential campaign and result.  This was such a great concert, and it will always have a special place in my heart. 

最後の写真はリハーサルの様子です。僕の作品はこうしてスクリーンに映されることになりました。デジタル作品は、光の関係で見えずらい部分が多かったので、後で調整。
The last image was a rehearsal. My works were all displayed on the big screen. Because of the lighting, I had to edit the brightness of my pieces.
